Having my doubts about iPhone development
September 24th, 2008. Published under iPhone. No Comments.
As many of you know, I’ve been very eager to start my journey to becoming an iPhone developer. However, I’ve started to have my doubts. While keeping an eye on the iPhone App Store over the past months there have been three incidents that have caused my concern:
- The “I am rich” app was allowed into the catalog
- Apple rejected the Podcaster app. (An app which I would most likely have bought)
- Apple sends out NDAs to developers who publish the rejection details.
What worries me is mainly how Apple uses the NDA as leverage against the developers. In my opinion, Apple has always been very good at taking care of developers. They have a great set of tools that are included with OS X. They provide excellent online resources, such as the “Developer Connection”.
Why reject apps that have overlapping functionality with their own apps? If the app sells, It’s win-win for both parties. Why use the NDA (which you have to accept if you want to develop for the iPhone) as a tool to silence developers? As a developer, having to deal with legal issues can make me walk away in a second. Another absurd consequence of the NDA is not being able to discuss development details with other iPhone developers!
For me the bottom line is; if Apple doesn’t rethink their NDA policy I will have to look at alternatives such as Google Android.
